The Courtyard Hempcrete Home
Conceived as a semi-off-grid, passive-solar courtyard home for a multigenerational family, the house is arranged as a series of interlinked rooms, walls and sheltered outdoor spaces. Its composition draws on the patterns of old ruins—where fragments of walls define places to gather, retreat and move between—while the central courtyard forms a protected shared heart for family life.
Each room is given a distinct relationship to the site. Some spaces turn inward to the sheltered courtyard, while others open outward to the surrounding bush, with outlook and enclosure responding to the level of privacy required. This creates a varied sequence of interior experiences as the house moves between openness, prospect, shelter and retreat. Continuous hempcrete walls extend beyond the glazing as blade walls, defining courtyards, framing views and anchoring the home within the landscape.
The house is oriented north to capture low winter sunlight, with the concrete floor providing thermal mass to absorb this warmth during the day and release it as temperatures fall. Shading limits unwanted summer heat, while openings arranged around the courtyard encourage natural cross-ventilation. The plan also takes advantage of air moving across the nearby dam, using its evaporative effect to temper incoming summer breezes.
Hempcrete is central to both the architectural language and environmental performance of the home. Chosen for its low-toxicity composition, insulating qualities and lower embodied impact, its thickness and continuity are expressed through deep reveals and extending blade walls rather than treated merely as a construction system. Its combination of insulation, thermal inertia and moisture-buffering capacity helps moderate indoor temperature and humidity, while its vapour-permeable construction supports a breathable, expressive and resilient wall system.
