An owner-builder wanted to build a compact, humble and sustainable home by the beach for himself and his daughter. This was an exercise of opportunities within a tight budget, robust design discussions and costing investigations that led to compromise and creative solutions. The resulting proposal is a functional, comfortable and compact residence that has low-environmental impact and contributes to the self-sustaining lifestyle that is prevalent in the local community.

The proposed development consists of a single carport, a Main dwelling and a small second dwelling that doubles up as a space for family and friends and an AirBnB for secondary income.

The sharp gable roofs of the Main Dwelling and Studio form pavilions in a landscape, with loft ceilings and mezzanines creating a sense of spaciousness in both compact dwellings. They are clad with a fire-resistant timber species, sourced directly by local suppliers. The position of the water tank and carport frames the dwellings from the streetscape.

A solar heat pump and solar roof array is also proposed and will be located on the roof facing north, harvesting solar energy and reducing reliance on the main grid. Proposed water tanks will store rain water for garden irrigation and flushing of toilets. Energy efficiency is achieved by harnessing natural sunlight, particularly during the winter months. This significantly reduces the need for artificial heating, resulting in lower energy costs and creating a more comfortable living space. The dwelling also has a north-facing deck accessed directly through the living areas, the deck offers views of the expansive north facing garden through sliding doors. These doors not only provide ventilation and passive cooling but also frame picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. Additionally, a corner window serves as a lookout towards Abels Bay.
